The People Who Make Ordinary Meals More Fun

I have had meals where the food was perfectly fine, the restaurant was nothing particularly special, and yet I left thinking, “That was such a good evening.”

Usually, it had very little to do with what was on the table.

I think about the friends who can turn ordering dinner into a twenty-minute debate, or the ones who somehow have a story for every dish that arrives. There are people who make you laugh so much that you forget to check your phone, and others who can turn a simple meal into a full update on everything that has happened since you last met.

I have realised that some people bring their own atmosphere wherever they go.

I have eaten at busy food courts, small cafés, neighbourhood restaurants, and places where we were simply grabbing something because everyone was hungry. The setting changes, but the experience can feel remarkably similar when I am with the right people.

Sometimes, we barely talk about the food. We talk about work, relationships, ridiculous things we saw online, or plans that probably will not happen. Someone inevitably steals a fry. Someone orders too much. Someone says they are leaving after dessert and stays for another hour.

Those are the meals I tend to remember.

Maybe a memorable meal does not need an impressive menu. Sometimes, it just needs people who make you want to stay at the table a little longer.

I used to think choosing the right restaurant was the most important part of making plans. Now, I think about who I am meeting first.

Because with the right people, even an ordinary Tuesday dinner can become something I am glad I said yes to.
