I have always found it interesting how quickly Singapore changes its appetite when the weather does.
On a hot afternoon, the coffee shop near my block seems to fill with people carrying iced drinks. Conversations happen around condensation-covered cups, while anything steaming is suddenly treated with suspicion. Then the rain arrives, sometimes without much warning, and the same neighbourhood begins looking for something completely different.
I notice it most when I am deciding what to eat myself.
On rainy evenings, I start thinking about soup. Fish soup, mee sua, maybe a bowl of noodles with enough broth to make the weather outside feel less significant. It is strange how a change in temperature can make certain foods suddenly feel necessary.
The interesting part is that I am rarely the only one.
Walk into a neighbourhood coffee shop during a downpour and you begin to see a collective change. More people order hot drinks. Soup stalls become busier. Steaming bowls move across tables while umbrellas gather near entrances, dripping onto the floor.
Nobody has organised this.
There is no announcement telling us that today is a soup day. Yet somehow, we arrive at the same conclusion.
The opposite happens when the heat becomes relentless. Suddenly, cold desserts, iced kopi, fruit drinks and anything refreshing seem more appealing. I have watched people stand in front of drink stalls for several minutes, looking at the menu as though choosing the right drink might somehow solve the weather.
Perhaps food is one of the ways we negotiate with our environment.
We cannot control Singapore’s humidity or predict when the next storm will arrive, but we can decide what goes into our bowl. A hot afternoon calls for something cooling. A wet evening makes us look for warmth.
And in neighbourhoods across Singapore, these individual choices often become collective ones.
I find something reassuring about that. The weather changes, we notice, and somehow the entire neighbourhood seems to know what to eat next.
I suppose that is part of the fun of following where a good meal takes you, and there are plenty more places to wander into right here.
