How Do We Know A Date Is Going Well? It Might Be In The Small Moments

I don’t think I’ve ever realised I liked someone because of one grand romantic moment. It’s usually because of something much smaller.

I remember sitting across from someone on an early date, both of us still figuring out what to say. We had already done the usual introductions, talked about work, complained about the weather, and asked each other what we liked to eat. Nothing particularly exciting was happening.

Then when our food arrived, he immediately pushed one of his dishes towards me and said I should try it.

I told him I was fine, but he insisted because he thought I’d like it. I did. Then I gave him some of mine, mostly because I’d ordered too much.

That tiny exchange somehow made the whole evening feel different and I started paying attention to the little things instead of wondering whether I was making a good impression.

I remember liking how easily he laughed at my attempts of being funny. I liked that he didn’t make every silence feel awkward. I liked that he was genuinely interested when I talked about something I cared about, even when it probably wasn’t very interesting to him.

It did make me reflect a bit more on what I find charming in a person. Sometimes it’s seeing how someone treats the staff. Sometimes it’s discovering that the person who seemed reserved over text is actually hilarious in person. Sometimes it’s realising we can disagree about what to order without turning it into a debate.

Oddly eneough, that’s what I like about early dates over food. You get to see someone in situations that aren’t carefully planned.

Attraction can grow in the ordinary details we wouldn’t have thought to look for.

I think that’s why I remember certain restaurants even when I can’t remember exactly what I ordered. The place becomes attached to that first glimpse of someone’s personality, before either of you knows where things are going.

Maybe you don’t leave knowing whether you’ll see each other again.

But you leave thinking about that person a little more than you expected.

And when you’re looking for somewhere that could become the setting for your own unexpected connection, there are plenty of possibilities waiting at Town Eats SG.
