There is an unspoken agreement that comes with ordering fries with friends.
They are technically yours. Yet the moment the basket arrives, they somehow become everyone’s.
I have never seen this agreement discussed, but everyone seems to understand it. You can take a few. You can reach across the table without asking. You can even claim the fries in the middle as long as you don’t behave as though they belong entirely to you.
The real test comes when someone takes too many.
I have been both offender and victim, so I know there is no moral high ground here. There is a particular kind of betrayal in watching a friend take six fries in one hand when you know perfectly well they only ordered a drink.
The rules become even more complicated when there is one particularly good fry left. Perhaps it is unusually crispy, slightly longer than the others, or covered in exactly the right amount of seasoning. Nobody says anything, but suddenly everyone becomes aware of it.
I usually pretend not to notice.
Sometimes someone takes it anyway.
What makes this funny is that these tiny negotiations only happen among people who are comfortable enough with one another to ignore formal manners. With strangers, we would probably ask before reaching over. With close friends, the boundaries become flexible because the relationship can absorb a little selfishness.
Food has always had a way of revealing these small parts of friendship. Who shares willingly. Who guards their portion. Who orders extra because they already know everyone will eat theirs.
I think thats why fries have become such a useful measure of friendship. Not because they are important, but because we learn how much we can take from someone without needing to explain ourselves.
And perhaps the best friendships are the ones where the final fry can be argued over, stolen, surrendered, and laughed about before the bill even arrives.
