I often tell myself that I am just stepping out for a quick meal. Something simple, nothing that will take too much time. I think most of us say that when the day already feels full, and we still want to see someone anyway.
I remember meeting a friend recently and choosing a place that felt easy, somewhere we could eat and leave without much planning. But once we sat down, the conversation started to stretch in ways we did not expect.
I realize that time moves differently when the table feels comfortable. The bowl we ordered arrives, we eat slowly, and between bites, we talk about things we did not even plan to bring up. Work stories turn into older memories, and suddenly the idea of leaving feels unnecessary.
I was really grateful we found a dining place that felt classy but still affordable enough that we did not have to think twice about what we ordered. It was somewhere we could focus on talking about everything else and quietly appreciate how spontaneity never has to compromise the experience.
I learn to rarely regret these unplanned hours. There is something grounding about staying seated when you thought you would already be on your way home. The table becomes less about eating and more about catching up with life as it is right now.
By the time we finally leave, it is never really just a quick meal anymore. It becomes a shared pause that quietly extends the day in a way I did not plan, but am always glad for.
