I was running a few errands around Toa Payoh Central on a Tuesday afternoon. By the time I finally finished everything on my list, it was a little past 5 PM. I just wanted a proper sit-down meal before heading home, but I did not have the energy to figure out a complicated dinner plan.
That is when I walked past The Larder Cafe. It sits right in the middle of the neighborhood, just a quick five-minute walk from the Toa Payoh MRT station.
Cozy atmosphere, small space

From the outside, it looks like a modest, comfortable local spot. I walked in and found a table easily since it was still early for dinner. The space itself is fairly small and cozy.
The tables are arranged a little close to each other, so I can imagine the room getting quite noisy and tight during the weekend rush. But at five in the afternoon, the vibe was perfectly relaxed.
QR code ordering keeps it simple
They use a QR code ordering system, which I always appreciate when I just want to get my food sorted quickly. I decided to order the Black Pork Burger, which goes for about $20, and a plate of the Carbonara Spaghetti for around $17. I also tacked on an order of Fried Chicken Wings to share.
Burger shines, spaghetti overwhelms

The burger was definitely the standout of the meal. It came with a crusty charcoal bun that held up well against the handmade pork patty. The meat was fresh, juicy, and well-seasoned.
It also came with a side of fries, and they were surprisingly generous with the portion. The fries were crispy, hot, and honestly exactly what you want next to a heavy burger.
The Carbonara Spaghetti was a slightly different story. It was very creamy, rich, and loaded with savory bacon and earthy mushrooms. If you love a thick, heavy cream sauce, you will probably enjoy it. However, it felt a bit one-dimensional to me.
Crispy, Juicy Wings
After a few bites, the richness became overwhelming, and I found myself wishing for something bright to cut through the heavy saltiness.
The Fried Chicken Wings balanced things out, though. They arrived piping hot with a great crispy exterior and juicy meat inside. They are a simple, fuss-free side dish, but they hit the spot perfectly.
No Room for Dessert
I skipped dessert this time because the portions were quite filling, but I noticed a few tables sharing some decent-looking waffles.
Smooth service during off-peak hours
The service was smooth and straightforward. The staff were friendly and brought the food out in about fifteen minutes. Since it was off-peak, getting a glass of water or extra napkins was easy.
I have heard it gets much harder to flag someone down when the dinner crowd hits, so keep that in mind if you plan to visit on a Friday night.
Expect to spend anywhere from $15 to $30 a person, depending on whether you get drinks or starters. It is reasonably priced for cafe fare, though some of the pasta dishes feel slightly expensive for the actual flavor you get.
Visit in the late afternoon for a relaxed vibe
If you want to avoid the queues, definitely try dropping by in the late afternoon between 3 PM and 5 PM. If you show up during the weekend dinner peak, you will likely end up waiting outside for a table.
When it makes sense to come here

If you live nearby or find yourself around Toa Payoh, this is the kind of place that fits easily into your day. It works well for a simple meal with family, or when you’re meeting a friend and just want somewhere comfortable to sit and talk over familiar food.
It’s not somewhere I would plan a trip across Singapore for, and it’s also not the best spot if you’re hoping to settle in with a laptop for a few hours. The space leans more towards casual dining than lingering.
But if you’re already in the area and craving a hearty Western meal without overthinking it, The Larder Cafe feels like a safe choice. It’s the kind of neighborhood spot you can return to when you just want something reliable that does the basics well.
